2024 Captain Steele Lecture
Climate Change and the Future of Gardening: Richard Zurawski and Sarah Rutherford
Sunday, October 6, 2:00 – 4:30 pm
Join us for a discussion on the science of climate change and the future of gardening. Richard Zurawski, meteorologist and science writer, will review the science and impact of climate change on Atlantic Canada and Sarah Rutherford will present her views on the impact of climate change on English Gardens on their world-class plant collections. The presentations will be followed by questions, discussion and a reception.
This fall Dr. Sarah Rutherford, a Kew-trained horticulturalist and garden historian from Oxford England, is coming to Nova Scotia for the Steele Lecture. She has published the book “Capability Brown and His Landscape Gardens” for the National Trust (2016) and and has written other books on garden history including six other titles for the Shire Library. In her work in compiling conservation plans for historic parks and gardens climate change is always a factor. She recently completed a study for Wakehurst Place, site of the Kew Millenium Seed Bank, including aspects of the impact of climate change on their world-class plant collections.
Richard Zurawski is a science writer and communicator, author of four published books, radio talk show host, meteorologist, and former Halifax Regional Municipality Councillor. He has a PhD (ABD), M.A. (research) and a B.Sc. (Physics). Richard was a professor at St Mary’s University, a science documentary producer, the member of the shadow cabinet for the Green Party of Canada (Climate Crisis Critic) and currently a candidate for HRM Council.
