The Art of Gardening: Lessons from Chanticleer Joe Henderson Horticulturalist Chanticleer Garden
Chanticleer Horticulturist and co-author of The Art of Gardening: Design Inspiration and Innovative Planting Techniques from Chanticleer, Joe Henderson will bring inspiring garden ideas to Nova Scotia from his work at Chanticleer Garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Chanticleer has been called the most romantic, imaginative, and exciting public garden in America. It is a place of pleasure and learning, relaxing yet filled with ideas to take home.
Joe is responsible for the pond gardens and Asian woods at Chanticleer. He is a craftsman and a jeweller as well as a garden designer and horticulturalist. He has also worked with Christopher Lloyd and Fergus Garrett from Great Dixter, the English garden that often partners with Chanticleer on symposiums and workshops.
What Makes Chanticleer Special
Chanticleer emerges from the site, taking advantage of the topography, views, and trees. The process of planning and caring for the garden in equally integrated. The designs are done in-house by the people who do the planting and maintenance and who also make the furniture, gates and bridges. The garden evolves organically and continuously rather than as a major landscape plan imposed upon the site. The garden is dynamic and fund, changing greatly from year to year and even season to season. Every design can be made better. No matter how good it is, something new will at least be different, presenting another concept. It is a garden for the sake of being a garden. We encourage creativity in all aspects of the operation.”
