“Capturing Chanticleer, Photographing the Garden”

Lisa Roper, Chanticleer Gardens

Lighting is a key factor in creating a successful image. In this presentation, we look at the effects of different types of light and what mood they create. Lisa’s goal is to capture the constantly evolving garden, seeking new perspectives, ways to frame a view, and light that is transformative. Using Chanticleer Garden as a backdrop, elements of design such as composition, symmetry and vantage point will be covered. Lisa will also discuss the technique of using photography to inform design decisions in the Gravel Garden, one of the handful of gardens she develops.  

Lisa Roper is the Gravel Garden and Ruin horticulturist at Chanticleer, a public garden in Wayne Pa. where she has gardened for the past 36 years in various parts of the garden. Lisa also photographs Chanticleer Garden weekly for the Chanticleer website.

Lisa has a BFA in fine art from The Cooper Union in NYC where she studied fine art and photography. She is a graduate of the Longwood Gardens Professional Gardener Training Program. Lisa has been a guest gardener at Stellenbosch University Garden in South Africa and Great Dixter in East Sussex, UK. She is also a contributor to The Art of Gardening, design inspiration and planting techniques from Chanticleer.
