SUMMARY:ARHS October 2024 Presentation: Captain Steele Lecture\, Climate Change and  the Future of Gardening
DESCRIPTION:2024  Captain Steele Lecture \nClimate Change and  the Future of Gardening: Richard  Zurawski and Sarah  Rutherford \nSunday\,  October  6\,   2:00  –   4:30 pm  \nJoin us for a  discussion  on the  science of  climate change and the future of gardening.   Richard  Zurawski\, meteorologist and  science writer\, will  review  the science and  impact of climate change on Atlantic Canada and Sarah Rutherford will present her views on the impact of climate change on English Gardens on their world-class plant collections.  The  presentations will be followed by questions\,  discussion and a reception. \nThis fall Dr. Sarah Rutherford\, a Kew-trained horticulturalist and garden historian from Oxford England\, is coming to Nova Scotia for the Steele Lecture.  She has published the book “Capability Brown and His  Landscape Gardens”  for  the  National  Trust (2016)  and  and has written other books on garden history including six other titles for the Shire Library. In her work in compiling conservation plans for historic parks and gardens climate change is always a factor.  She recently completed  a study  for Wakehurst Place\,  site of the Kew Millenium Seed Bank\, including aspects of the impact of climate change on their world-class plant collections. \nRichard Zurawski is a science writer and communicator\, author of four published books\, radio talk show host\, meteorologist\, and former Halifax Regional Municipality Councillor. He has a PhD (ABD)\, M.A. (research) and a B.Sc.
